Amr Obaid (Cairo) witnessed a comprehensive triumph for the UAE cycling team in 2024, proving the vision of our wise leadership in always striving for excellence and emphasizing the importance of cycling on both competitive and community levels, as a 'national project'. The UAE team won 81 races this season, including 25 victories by their leader, Tadej Pogacar, who won the 'Best Rider' award for the fourth consecutive year, qualifying the team for the top spot in the World Tour ranking for the second consecutive year. The team's stars won first place in several major international events: they won the second stage of the UAE Tour, the only event in the International Cycling Union's calendar in the Middle East, and took the top three spots in the Abu Dhabi Island Tour, with American Brandon McNulty finishing first with a time of 13 minutes and 27 seconds. The team's star, Tadej Pogacar, had a brilliant start, winning the Italian Strada Bianchi Tour, finishing the race in 5 hours, 19 minutes, and 45 seconds, just two minutes and 44 seconds ahead of his closest rival, despite facing extremely difficult weather conditions due to strong winds and cold temperatures. Pogacar continued his impressive form, winning the Spanish Catalonia Tour, taking four stages out of seven, starting with the second stage, then the third, and finishing with victories in the sixth and seventh stages, earning several awards during the race, including the 'King of the Mountains' award for the best climber and the overall classification award, as well as the points classification award. Juan Ayuso then took over, giving the UAE team the Basque Country Tour title after a fierce competition, with the Spanish rider crossing the finish line in the sixth stage at the same time as his countryman Carlos Rodriguez from a rival team, but Ayuso benefited from the team's overall time to win the title alongside the 'Blue Jersey' award for the best young rider. Pogacar returned after three years to win the Belgian Liège-Bastogne-Liège Tour, holding the fourth spot among the most successful riders in this event's history, winning in 6 hours, 13 minutes, and 48 seconds, just one minute and 39 seconds ahead of his closest rival, and the team shone collectively, enabling Pogacar to win. In his first participation in the Giro d'Italia, Pogacar won seven stages out of 21, finishing the race in first place with a gap of 9 minutes and 56 seconds, securing a historic victory for the UAE team, as it was the first time a team had won the Italian classic, and Pogacar also won the 'Blue Jersey' award for the best climber. The UAE team continued its dominance in the Swiss Tour, with riders Adam Yates and João Almeida finishing first and second, respectively, and British rider Yates collecting three jerseys during the tour, including the 'Yellow Jersey' for the overall classification, the 'Black Jersey' for the points classification, and the 'Red Jersey' for the mountains classification. The UAE team wrote history in the French Tour de France, with Pogacar winning his third title in history, with a series of impressive numbers that drove global media to praise Tadej and the UAE team, with Pogacar raising his record to 40 stages in which he has held the 'Yellow Jersey' through the history of the French Tour, and the team maintained the yellow jersey for 18 consecutive stages. Swiss rider Marc Hirschi then gave the team a new victory in the Spanish Clásica San Sebastián, setting a time of 5 hours, 46 minutes, and 12 seconds, despite the French rider Julien Alaphilippe, a former world champion, finishing at the same time, Hirschi's late surge gave him the win. Pogacar won his second Montreal Grand Prix title, after winning in 2022, and it was not easy, as he overtook his pursuers by just 24 seconds, thanks to a collective team effort, giving Pogacar the opportunity to execute the decisive attack in the last 23 kilometers. The season ended 'brilliantly' for the UAE team and its star Pogacar, who won the Lombardy Tour by a margin of 3 minutes and 16 seconds from his closest rival, after racing solo for the last 48 kilometers, ending the season as the world champion and with his team finishing first in the International Cycling Union's ranking, after Pogacar added the World Championship title to his Giro d'Italia and Tour de France titles, becoming the third rider in history to achieve this feat.
