I mentioned in another thread that I heard of someone who had taken all of his data, all of his external drives, and put them in a bag for fire evacuation.

That bag was stolen.

I think the lessons are to encrypt, and don't keep all your data in one place, even in an emergency. Leave some behind because the house might make it. And really, set up that offside backup earlier rather than later.

The cloud is maligned, but it is off-site, and an option for people who can't set up anything else.
