Aside from white supremacy and a compliant opposition, the main reason conservatives have gotten away with so much is the sheer cultural inertia of people refusing to believe they could lose access to abortion, contraception, the right to vote, or any number of other things in their lifetime. Dystopias are always posed as occurring somewhere in the future, and it's easy to build one in the shadow of that neglect.
