I was recently reading an article about the awkwardness of switching from your regular cafe to a nearby new one, which reminded me how much cafes have become social hubs in Australian neighbourhoods (something we saw bigtime during the pandemic).
Anyway, that reminded me of when my favourite laneway cafe near our apartment building was taken over by a funky roastery whose manager immediately put up the price of coffee, removed almost all the food menu, and - worst of all - made *all* the seating high stools. Three strikes, IMO.
Occasionally afterward I'd bump into the bloke in the street and exchange awkward hellos.
