Humanity's technological progress has only ever had a marginal impact on people's overall satisfaction. This is known as the Easterlin paradox: If basic needs are satisfied, additional prosperity does not lead to additional happiness. According to Schopenhauer, every feeling of happiness is based on a previous lack or suffering and the fulfilment of the resulting needs. This is quickly followed by the next lack and thus renewed dissatisfaction. Ultimately, every need is based on thoughts such as: "I need this or that in order to be happy."
