generally autism is still thought of as a "disease" that needs to be eradicated, rather than simply being wired differently. so yeah, your idea is totally plausible.
also, the more we learn about it, the more it is "diagnosed," and people think "omg it's an epidemic" when in fact the number of autistic people hasn't actually changed, it's just being noticed more often.
note that i am speaking here as one who identifies as neurotypical,* and so if i have stepped on anyone's toes here, please forgive 🩷
