The land and resources belonged to the British monarchy. Trump & the military defeated the British monarchy so according to DoD law of war manual when a military defeats and enemy. The land, it's resources and people are transfered ownership to the winning military.
Canada was never a sovereign, the Canadian people were subjects of the Royal Family. Nothing ever belonged to them. If they didn't sit around like blobs waiting to be liberated and instead liberated themselves then yes it would of belonged to them.
The land, resources and people now belong to the USA.
