In 2010 when an awareness campaign I launched about how Facebook was using users data went viral, I said in a CNBC documentary that “your data is a currency”. I wasn’t the first to say this, can’t take that credit. This was before Cambridge Analytica. I was the tinfoil hat wearing weirdo then for this take.
I was right. That data is YOU: your output. Your posts but also your activities and proclivities. In the years since we’ve seen that data collated into campaigns created by incentivized entities of all kinds to be used to manipulate us to buy, vote, feel how they need us to.
Nostr as an under layer removes entirely this stronghold on our minds.
Just thinking about the answer to the accusatory “What’s nostr really doing for freedom” question and really, I’ve barely begun to unravel that.
