I don't get the point of hiding your project until it is super polished philosophy, I can understand waiting to market it before it is polished.
But I like building in the open, people test your stuff and tell you what to focus on instead of you guessing what the users would've wanted.
The other approach just seems like building a shiny product no one probably even needs, it might not be true for all cases, but it does sound like a mindset that brews such apps.
