Gosh I sure do hope I wasn't so distracted by my dissertation that I did not actually put the files on that drive! Or failed to preserve that drive in some place! Or somehow left it in fucking Texas, who even knows anymore!
I was so careful about keeping work & life separate by doing all my work on the work laptop, not my own, but I was also so careful to create multiple backups of that work. I thought.
