Circa November-December the city of San Diego and the Airport Authority (I believe) tried to create an extra lane of traffic on Grape Street.
Grape Street is a major route that diverts airport car traffic to the I-5 freeway. Needless to say people drive on Grape Street at freeway speeds trying to catch all the green lights.
One huge problem with this is that Grape Street runs through Little Italy. It is a very dense neighborhood full of local and tourist foot traffic. Given the city’s goal of attaining ZERO pedestrian deaths, why would the powers that be make Grape Street more dangerous for pedestrians than it already is?
They’ll tell you that it’s necessary to move car traffic in and out of the airport quickly and efficiently. And the pedestrians? Well the pedestrians be damned!
The good news is that public outcry was enough to at least postpone the conversation of the parking lanes to active driving lanes.
I don’t trust the powers that be. What will those weasels do to counter?
