Comparison of puffball-like fungi — the kind black inside is not safe to eat, and sometimes if it grows quickly, can look white inside like the edible kind. It’s much harder with a much thicker, bumpy skin, though, so still identifiable.
Big ol’ reishi
A cool shelf fungus with irregular pores that “glance” or seem to shimmer in the light
A deliciously citrus-smelling edible oyster mushroom
A couple kinds of fungi that parasitize other fungi
Gilled bolete
Poison Pax, traditionally considered a choice edible, but discovered in the ‘40s that you can accumulate a deadly amount of its toxin quietly over your life until it adds up to put you over the threshold of sudden incurable disease
Coral fungi
My own collected Cordyceps militaris, growing out of an underground pupa
