It's quite striking what goes on behind the scenes with Muslim scholars who show a positive attitude towards Bitcoin. It's not just that they are numerically outnumbered by the dismissive sheikhs; they also seem to be attacked via email by their fanboys, saying things like, 'You are a bad sheikh because you write positively about Bitcoin. My [favorite mufti] said Bitcoin is haram because [insert any already refuted argument here].'
Not only do these favorite muftis lack the necessary economic and technical knowledge, making their fatwas invalid, but they also have not advanced the Ummah in any way and are too lazy to engage with the existing refutations. To me, this is a sign of arrogance and insincerity.
It's not that Bitcoin comes before my religion; I would gladly follow a reasonable fatwa from a school of thought if it were well-founded. But they are not, and that is the problem. They are all overflowing with ignorance regarding the secular knowledge needed to understand what Bitcoin actually is. I have trouble considering such a fatwa as valid at all.
