It took fully 15 minutes to pay for my shopping today, because the supermarket has a completely impenetrable offer on.

The offer is for two pizzas, a side, and a drink, and there's a bunch of products around the store tagged as part of the offer. I grabbed four such items and the offer didn't get applied.

Online shopping websites tell you when and why offers aren't complete, so you can fix it, but self checkout machines just quietly don't apply the offer and make it your problem to work out why. I made it the assistant's problem, she made it her manager's problem, and two more employees got involved before someone figured out that the burgers I'd picked up count, for the purposes of the offer, as a pizza. (To be fair, they are breaded burgers so by the cube rule they are technically calzones.) And the tag by the burgers does say "pizza", but the tag by the ham and pineapple pizza says "drink" and I have to assume *that one* is a mistake. Surely?

The wild thing is, the actual offer is clearly better than "you can get cheap food but only if you eat nothing but pizza", which is what they advertise. If they explained the offer more clearly they'd have more customers who pay faster, but instead they advertise a slightly worse thing and then pay for about half an hour of staff time to figure out what the actual thing is. It is truly bewildering behaviour.
