I assume with "alternators" you mean inverters.
Sure you can build an off-grid system with those, but then you have to cope with all those situations where consumption exceeds your inverter's power limits.
Therefore most systems run grid-parallel to mitigate any consequences of inverter failures.
But with a DC system you can connect a ton of batteries to your microgrid which balance the island without any electronics involved. Just like a car's electrical system works.
