Maybe there's no substitute for the work of reducing one's dependency graph to a manageable size (and, by extension, writing more code oneself), then going through all the dependencies one by one, finding out their funding and maintenance situation, and pitching in whatever small amount one can afford. So I should figure out how to make time to do that on top of everything else.
