Day 38 on the series from TCM’s book “The Essentials: 52 Must-See Movies and Why They Matter Volume 1” by Jeremy Arnold.
“Some Like It Hot” (1959) directed, produced and co-written by Billy Wilder. It stars Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, with George Raft, Pat O'Brien, Joe E. Brown, Joan Shawlee and Nehemiah Persoff in supporting roles.
WHY IT’S AN ESSENTIAL
“For sheer, unrelenting audience laughter, ‘Some Like It Hot’ is unbeatable, with a reputation as one of the finest comedies ever made. Its brilliance perhaps boils down to the fact that for all its dazzling comic lines and funny physical moments, it doesn't rely merely on surface shtick for its laughs; its comedy goes much deeper. It boasts a truly funny story, laden with ironies and reversals, and tinged with moments of pathos that build a strong emotional connection between the audience and characters. It also stands as Marilyn Monroe's most essential film, with her sex-symbol status never used more cleverly than here by director Billy Wilder.
“[i]n the beach scene where she (Monroe) first meets Curtis disguised as a bored mil-lionaire, she nailed a three-minute take on the first try with a wonderfully natural, spontaneous delivery. For all the anguish, Wilder knew that he was getting bits and pieces of a great performance. As he said, ‘Anyone can remember lines, but it takes a real artist to come on the set, not know her lines, and give the performance she did.’ He added that she always instinctively knew where the laugh was in any line or scene, something that is not always so obvious.
“Wilder and Diamond wrote the last line of
the movie on a Sunday night and shot it the next morning; they considered it the least bad of several options and hoped they would come up with something better on the set. They didn't—for the simple reason that no other words could have been more perfect.” (p. 195, 197)
