Been thinking lately about how building software systems from scratch is kind of like carving a sculpture from a block of marble; you start with a general shape, and you can carve away big chunks at first as you approach that shape.
But then you start finding little details you didn't think about, small simplifications, other refinements. You have to work all over it, chipping away tiny bits of stone. You can't just carve the legs, then the torso, then the head and be done.
