The supervolcano, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming State - United States of America

(catastrophic eruption would have devastating consequences for North America, and global climate)

The volcano below Yellowstone National Park is known as the Yellowstone Super Volcano.

This volcano is famous for its violent eruptions, called “super eruptions.”

Yellowstone's super-volcano has had three super-erruptions in the past 2.1 million years, the latest about 640,000 years ago.

These eruptions formed the Yellowstone cauldron, a massive volcanic depression measuring approximately 55 miles by 72 kilometers.

Volcanic activity in Yellowstone is currently being closely monitored due to the potential global impact a new eruption could have.

The park is famous for its geysers, thermal springs, and other geothermal activities, all powered by the heat of magma below the surface.

The Yellowstone supervolcano is really impressive in terms of size and potential impact.

Yellowstone's magmatic camera is awesome. It is at a depth of between 4 and 14 kilometers below the surface and contains 40.5 thousand km3 of magma.

In addition, there is an even larger magma reservoir below the magmatic chamber, which stretches from 19 to 45 km deep and has a volume of almost 47 thousand km3.

If a catastrophic eruption were to occur, it could have devastating consequences, not just for North America, but potentially for the global climate, due to the amount of ash and gases that would be released into the atmosphere.

Yes, Yellowstone is chronologically recorded.

The three most significant super-erruptions occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640 thousand years ago.
These eruptions formed the boilers of Island Park, Henry's Fork and Yellowstone.

If the Yellowstone Supervolcano erupted today, the events would be catastrophic:

- Explosive Eruption: The eruption would release a huge amount of ash and gases into the atmosphere, creating an eruption column that could reach tens of kilometers in height.

- Ash fall: The areas close to the volcano could be covered with a layer of ash up to a meter deep.
This would cause destruction of infrastructure, pollution of water and air, and severe impacts on agriculture.

- Climate Change: The ash and gases in the atmosphere would block sunlight, resulting in a global drop in temperature up to 10°C4.
This “volcanic winter” could last for years, affecting food production and causing humanitarian crises.

- Global Impact: The eruption would have global effects: disruptions in air traffic, impacts on public health due to ash inhalation, and possible changes in global climate patterns.

The magnitude of an eruption of this kind is difficult to accurately predict, but scientists are constantly monitoring volcanic activity in Yellowstone to try to predict and mitigate the risks.

While the Yellowstone supervolcano has the potential to cause a significant catastrophe, there is no evidence of an eruption imminent.

The United States Geological Service (USGS) and other organizations maintain strict surveillance of the volcano and have alert systems to detect any abnormal activity.

The chances of a Yellowstone supervolcano eruption in the coming years are extremely low.
