Pretty complex. He was against a wall his entire adult life. The reason he was made a kingsguard (book cannon) was so the king could low key threaten and insult Tywin, putting his heir in a position to not inherit nor produce offspring.
Yeah he killed the king, but like you said he was in the right...ish (he could have just captured him). Then he was kept on the kingsguard so he could stand outside the kings chambers while he cheats on his sister (but also his love so maybe a win?).
Then he was caught with his secret love and felt he had to act. The show coulda done him better but this scene was really well done.
