No it is not a hard problem, the key rotation problem is simply impossible to solve without reinventing Bitcoin, and the user on boarding problem is trivial solved by web fingers.

They just decided to pretend to be doing something they either knew impossible to do, or worse.

The user adoption wouldn't have been affected if they just gave users usernames ... unless you mean the smoke and mirror of decentralised identity helped adoption, but I suspect no body really gives a shot about that.
