The Lightning Network was first deployed on the Bitcoin mainnet in 2017 – but in its early days, it was pretty rough and not very user-friendly.
For a couple of years, it was too difficult to use in a non-custodial way – it required channel opening and management, a good understanding of network routing principles, and a minimum amount of proficiency in command line interactions.
Historically speaking, there have been notable early attempts to make the Lightning Network easy and accessible to everyone: the Casa node being a great example of a device which attempted to put all the sovereign features in a box.
However, it wasn’t until Electrum integrated ACINQ’s trampoline transactions and mobile wallets such as Breez, Phoenix, Muun, and Blixt landed on the scene that non-custodial Lightning was truly easy.
Today, a wallet like Blixt enables you to privately open your own well-connected channels without having to do any kind of maintenance work – you only make an on-chain transaction and pay the setup fee, and then after 1 confirmation you’re good to go.
Today, Lightning is finally simple, accessible, and ready for mass adoption. Nonetheless, there are still improvements to be made and in the coming years we’re going to witness lots of refinements in both transaction routing and user experience.
Not only that, but 3rd layers such as RGB and Fedi will extend the functionality of the network by adding features that replicate today’s financial applications.
