Type 1 diabetics need to externally administer insulin to maintain their health. The condition requires up to 300 decisions a day to avoid illness. Two tools exist to assit them, the insulin pump and the glucose monitor. But these devices are proprietary technologies.
Because of govt regulation and a lack of interest by medical companies no solution existed for these devices to be able to interface with each other and automatically manage diabetics condition.
