I've done the same thing for similar reasons twice in my life and I am far, far better off as a result. In my opinion it is absolutely not worth maintaining the relationship. You are better off making new friends and you'll be happier for it. These sound like miserable people that want to drag you into their misery.



What's unusual is that one of them is reaching out. In my case all they did was spread rumors about me and mine. Easy to ignore once I learned the only people who listened were of the same caliber. For the one guy putting in effort to contact you, he earns the prize of a curt, no bullshit explanation. Something like, "You have been trying to reach me for a while so I will give you an explanation. The group was a consistently hateful environment and I no longer have the energy to tolerate it. I hope you understand and can change for the better. Until then, please leave me and my family alone." Let those close to you know the situation in case he doesn't take the hint. Afterwards hydrate and be prepared to take a massive dump when all that stress leaves your body.
