I was very surprise when I witnessed that for the first time. I have also witnessed people who have lost part of their income source because their phone broke and they are not able to retrieve their clients' phone number, as they have no notion of how Google backups work.
Not so remote parts of the Brazilian Amazon, in this case. It would take them weeks to buy a new phone and to figure out how to get their new number to their previous contacts.
I've also seen them lose all of their pictures, including kid's birthdays and pictures important for legal dispute.
There is still a lot of education necessary for people to get minimum control over their information.
