I try to hammer it into every operator, do not operate during storms, don't operate if you think there's gonna be a storm, and most importantly, disconnect your coax both at the radio and the antenna. Part of my routine when going anywhere is disconnecting coax before I leave. There are caps you can buy that go over the male and female connex to keep out water, dust, dirt, etc.
