You owe it to yourself to check out *[Gigapocalypse](https://www.mobygames.com/game/176971/gigapocalypse/)*. Here's why.
Do you like kaijus? Do you wish you could tend and care to one like a [Tamagotchi](https://www.mobygames.com/game/46746/tamagotchi/)? Do you want to unleash your kaiju upon the unsuspecting residents of a calm but bustling city?
This is the entire premise of Gigapocalypse.
You raise your kaiju. You feed him, give him pats on the head, decorate his home. You guide his mutations.
And then, when you're ready, you go on a rampage -- stomping through a city, tearing down buildings, battling choppers shooting from the air.
Most of the time, you want make it through the city as little men with machine guns and bazookas try to put a stop to you. But each time you go on a rampage, you get points. And these points can be spent on improving your kaiju so that the next time, you can go further in your wreckage.
This game is largely controlled with a mouse. There's no need to steer your kaiju, his stomping is automatic. However, you can select where to target with the kaiju's powers, and you can click on special abilities to do big damage.
I love the graphics. I know that 16-bit pixel art can get boring at times, but it looks so perfect on a game like this. The sprites are big. The colours are vivid. And the art direction is generally in keeping with kaiju themes.
As for the soundtrack, well, do you like old school heavy metal? Do you like shredding guitar with blazing fast licks? Do you like thumping drums? And do you like all that while wreaking destruction and havoc? Then you will love Gigapocalypse.
I'm not just blowing hot air about Gigapocalypse. Almost everyone who's played this game loves it. It has a 95% positive rating on Steam, and a 3.7/5 on GOG.com. Clearly, this is a hidden gem.
Also, having played this on Steam Deck, I confirm that it works excellent and without a hitch. Just be aware that you will be using the trackpad quite a bit.
Goody Gameworks made Gigapocalypse. So far, this is the only game they have made. I hope they make another one since Gigapocalypse is so awesome.
Steam sells Gigapocalypse for C$12.99, but you can get it for cheaper -- without DRM -- on GOG.com for C$11.49.
I definitely recommend Gigapocalypse. To me, this game is a must play.
