It doesn't take a lot of compute speed to do AI, mainly takes RAM and bandwidth. AMD making Threadripper stupid expensive (so running a ton of 8GB cards in parallel isn't worthwhile) and NVIDIA being awful with RAM on consumer gear is to force AI people to spend on the higher tier gear.
