Why did the industry choose the SNES 4-button layout over the Genesis/Saturn 6-button layout?
If you look at controllers today, they all take the 4-button concept of the SNES (albeit with the A/B and X/Y buttons switched out).
Meanwhile, having six buttons like the Genesis/Saturn offers a lot more possibility for control schemes. You'd thin more options = better, and not just for fighting games.
