Someone noticed that in the first study the rats were alone in empty cages. Rats are intelligent and social, so they were bored and lonely. What if they weren't bored and lonely? In the follow up study, the rats were in a cage with friends and toys and an endless supply of cocaine. None of the rats in the second study became addicted.
