HA! I have always joked-- or thought I was joking-- that Victorian houses are depicted as haunted as a reflection of the cruelty of their time. I've mused on social media whether the McMansions of today will be subjects of horror fiction in a hundred years.

Turns out that's *exactly* why the haunted mansion became such a trope in fiction! Whether you even believe in ghosts or not, you can see why people felt the architectural charm was tainted by greed and cruelty.
