I'm being reminded of the Thomas Covenant The Unbeliever series by Stephen Donaldson. Covenant is a hideously unlikeable character - he's a whiny man suffering with a untreated (yet treatable) historic disease (leprosy) who is hit by a car and isekai'd into an unbelievable (to him) fantasy world that cures his disease so vigorously that he rapes someone and gets in trouble for it.
For some inexplicable reason, the series was a success?
