Of course, this not the first image of the gravitational lensed quasar RX J1131-1231, although it is by far the sharpest.
It was discovered and first imaged in 2003 by the EFOSC2 instrument on the ESO 3.6-m telescope in La Silla, Chile.
The processed image on the right shows the the four images of the same distant quasar, the Einstein ring (the elongated image of the quasar's host galaxy) and the lensing galaxy (the central bright diffuse image).
