Mind you, they probably romanticise those too. Hell, there were people romanticising medieval warfare *whilst it was happening*, so there's certainly no shortage of that today.

But the medieval romanticisation of battle was very big on pious chivalric soldiers dying for the cause. Rather than the modern notion of waving a big sword about, riding a horse, then going home for a nice bath.

And those wars were full of death. Full of horrendous injuries (with no anaesthetic and no treatment). And also, less romantically, full of dysentery - so, so much dysentery - and long marches.

So, basically, going back to be a minor noble means a very high chance of either shitting yourself to death or dying with a lot of infected wounds.
