That assumes that every planet's civilisations go down the same self-destructive path as ours. That is a depressing thought.

Let's not forget though, that only 40 years ago one of our civilisations was tying to put teachers into space, not billionaires. It seems more likely that civilisations like those are the ones that will get to other planets.
