Seems like that an actual pogrom in Makhachkala was only a tiny bit away and it's only a miracle that nobody was killed...

> Israeli media on Monday morning published eyewitness accounts of a Red Wings flight from Tel Aviv to Makhachkala. The Ynet portal quotes a 26-year-old Jerusalem resident named Shmuel, who, according to him, was travelling to Dagestan to meet his fiancée who lives there. He says there were 15 Israelis, including children, on board the plane besides him. Most of them were travelling to Moscow with a connection in Makhachkala.

> Shmuel says that after landing, the passengers were taken off the plane in time to go through passport control (at the Makhachkala airport it is located on the first floor - RS note). "There we were told to wait, because there were riots outside. We were standing in the passport control room, and then we saw hundreds of people rushing inside the building." According to the Israeli, police evacuated the passengers into a bus, which began driving around the airfield. A crowd ran after the bus and threw stones at it.

> "There were children screaming inside the bus, one girl was hurt by a piece of glass that hit her. I don't know if she was Israeli or local. It was scary. The bus was trying to get away from the crowd, constantly turning round, people were chasing it and throwing stones. There were very few police and they did nothing. At one point the crowd managed to stop the bus. They got inside, went from person to person and asked them if they were Muslims or Jews. I said I was Muslim because I was scared. Fortunately, they believed me and went on their way."

> Then, according to an eyewitness, the passengers were taken on the same bus to the VIP lounge, where they were placed under guard. Four hours later, a Russian army helicopter arrived on the scene and evacuated him and other Israelis to a Russian military base, having first dispersed the crowd with shots in the air. On Monday morning, those who wished to continue their journey were offered a flight to Moscow. Shmuel also says that among the victims of the shooting at the airport was a stewardess working on the flight, and that many Israeli passengers were saved from the massacre only by the fact that they spoke Russian.
