I have never met Barre Philips or even heard him live.
however, he plays on a seminal album in my life, a record that it is not clear why ECM has never reissued it even on CD.
a series of beautiful compositions by Alfred Harth (whom I knew in those days because he played with Heiner Goebbels in Cassiber, a band from the Rock In Opposition scene that I listened to and followed a lot at the time) based on poems by Vicky Scrivener and sung by Maggie Nicols who was the first singer whose workshop I attended in Milan when I was a senior in high school.
in addition to them are Paul Bley (whom I listened to with knowledge for the first time then) and a very shy and very measured Trilok Gurtu, who had just landed in Europe and was far from becoming the egocentric and intrusive "fusionaro" of years to come.
following are a couple of excerpts that some good soul posted on the tube.
