I heard a teacher say once- if you get 100, the test wasn’t hard enough… in other words, when measuring, a perfect score means the test parameters were not ambitious enough. There’s a grey area  where some outperforming outliers lurk in the shadows of the unexamined. Your bias means your view of possibilities is too narrow, confined to the known…


God’s scope of measure however, is not like this. One trip to the mountains and you can see that the “bigness” of nature will easily humble any adventurer who thinks a perfect score is possible for our little existences. 


But in striving, we find purpose.


Bishop Barron talked recently about Christ’s unapologetic instruction, to be perfect. To relentlessly aim for the highest of our ability. Barron then goes on to talk about the flip side, which is absolute acceptance and love for the sinner. You WILL miss tge mark, but you can’t let the fear of missing stop you from trying, AND you have to avoid the self loathing of your failure. 


Balancing this simultaneous acceptance of defeat and still waking up every day and finding the spirit to aim at the most high is the way of the hero. 


With the left hand, we push away into the unknown and contend with the shadows. With the right- we gather our communities and provide safety. … an illustration here is the last supper, the two hands of the sovereign represents this ting and yang on an outward level, tge balance of striving and the love and safety of the shire. 


I’m reminded of the mythology around the grail. When the knights if they round table embarked on their quest, they did so to save Camelot by acquiring the grail. Each entered the wood at a point of their own choosing. Each learned through a humbling process that transformed them, that it’s in the quest that the essence of the grail is achieved, it’s an alchemical transformation where by the time you get to the grail, it’s a cup inside your heart that has already been filled.
