Back when I booked hotels for a living, I once got a call from a distressed client saying he's lost his confirmation number. No worries. I fear with that sort of thing all the time. I searched through the records and found nothing under his name. No worries. Sometimes people booked into a different hotel in the same city. Nothing came up. I contacted each hotel directly to see if they had anything under his name hadn't made it into the global system. I double checked with the client to see if the booking might have been made under a different name.
Still nothing. I triple checked with him to make sure he had indeed booked it, and he said he had, so I continued to search on a provincial level in case he'd mistakenly booked in the wrong city.
Finally, I got back to him and apologized, saying I could find no records of his booking anywhere. That's when he admitted he'd never booked anything at all, but was hoping that doing it this way would get him space in a sold-out hotel.
If I could've reached through a phone to strangle someone, that might've been the moment.
