languagelovers group (nprofile…l8f0) Surprised to see tsunami made it into Spanish. I see from Wiktionary that it has made it into many languages, either directly from Japanese or via English.
There's the whole other matter that "tsunami" supplanted "tidal wave." ¿Does English have a preference for one word over two?
The most interesting borrowing, IMO, is Finnish, which proceeds to apply its case endings to the word.
