I suspect someone looked at Twitter's Community Notes and went "yeah, that's an OK solution". Possibly out of frustration over all the *better* solutions that we just won't implement.
I suspect the fact that pretty much everyone who pushed back against the G+ integration disaster has either left or just nope'd the hell out of these discussions in self preservation hasn't helped. Nor that the systems that pushed the people to bail are still active and unfixed.
