One of the best things about living in a foreign country is that even after decades it remains exotic enough that you don't feel qualified to judge or responsible for fixing everything around you, as you might where you grew up. You can just accept with wide-eyed curiosity any parts of everyday life that you don't understand. (Though a downside is that you are never are fully at home in either place again.) This same scene in Savannah I'd surely judge as a shame. Here I think it's charming.
