I was always a great speller, plus a huge vocabulary. I took it for granted, did not even realize I was smug about it. So living in another language is humbling, even after 14y. I'm now a child on the other side, and good spellers are tyrants! Also, French is the worst for it, a grab bag of letters at random. Consider the word "eau." It's pronounced "O." So is "eaux." And haut and hauts and au and aux and Ault. Sigh. Add plurals, case, gender, tense, new punctuation. I mean, "Souhaiteraient"!
