Just a few days ago I read a book called The Death of Grass (or No Blade of Grass in the US) by John Christopher. It's from the 1950s and is about what happens when a plant virus wipes out all species of grass - which includes all the grains that provide most of humanity's food, and the grass that still fed most livestock back then. It's extremely bleak. Think Day of the Triffids meets Lord of the Flies.
