But, it wasn't until the celebrities and influencers joined Twitter (Katy Perry and Ashton Kutcher for starters, there was a race between the two of them back in 2007 to see who could get to 1 million followers first) before it really started to take off.
Once Ashton Kutcher joined, then Katy Perry, then Madonna, then Beyonce, then the rest is history.
And that's the problem here for the fediverse.
There aren't enough celebrities and influencers.
The highest value celeb we have is George Takei, and while I love George, he's not an influencer.
