But for my own part I think they complement each other and that expected access pattern kind of gives away which way to lean. So if you end up in SQL hell you've gone wrong and if you end up with a lot of duplication that is actually problematic and not just feels wrong you've also taken the wrong path. I like postgresql for the fact that for many things a jsonb column will give you that denormalization without complicating your stack.
