He did a big turnabout on his stance and wrote an article about why he was changing his mind about Russia but I doubt it was ever sincere.
For what it's worth, I don't think he was ever actually trying to recruit for Azov, it's just a natural assumption that was being made at the time since Azov was the face of Ukraine's military around here for a month or so.
