Clothes and shoes are productive, sports gambling is not. Very simple difference. And it's not about denying a lesson - it's about preventing the promotion of harmful behaviors. You could even call it sin if you'd like.
You're sounding like you have a very low view of human nature based on that take. Our goal should always be to try and elevate people and make them better versions of themselves, not worse. Allowing or even encouraging people to succumb to their lower states destroys societies.
