That is especially relevant now where some Desktop Environments are bound to Linux and (in particular) to systemd, forcing non-systemd distributions to provide emulation.
Or worse, making it really challenging to port to other Unixes like the #BSD family.
It's not systemd's or Linux fault per-se, but rather the attitude of developers that do not always consider a diverse environment.
