On this day, 85 years ago, Soviet forces invaded Finland (without actually declaring war) with 21 divisions, totaling 450,000 men, and bombed Helsinki, starting the Winter War between Finland (population 3,700,000) and the Soviet Union (population 170,900,000). Despite Soviet plans to occupy all of the country, the Finns managed to prevent an occupation but still had to cede Karelia and the access to the Barents Sea.
